I have taught private photography lessons for years aimed at students who found typical intro to photography books way too intimidating. Not trying to be funny but the easiest solution may be to buy an old lens ie manual focus only, which has markings. The snag is that these generally rely on a mechanical connection to the camera to stop down the aperture, which a modern camera wont have. You have to squeeze the preview button on the lens yourself.

Alternatively there are various dof calculator apps you can download. I used Photocalcs but pre calculated a number of reults to use as a ready reckoner. You will need to know your CoC value, generally taken as 0.03 for full frame, 0.045 for APSC and 0.06 for mft.

I found this book disappointing. It got good reviews on Amazon but as the other reviewer says, it appears to have been written for film then tweaked for digital – sort of. You don’t need all this guff about where to take the light meter reading for a sunset if you get instant feedback via the lcd whether you got the exposure right or not. No mention of how to use histograms?? And there is nothing in the book about interior photography at all. A big omission!!

I have this book and it’s generally excellent. However, the author often refers to using a the ‘depth of field’ markers on his lens. Most modern lenses don’t have DOF markers, so what am I supposed to do?

Great review. This was the first book I read after buying my DSLR after years of using point and shoots in auto mode and it got me off and running very quickly. I can also highly recommend Peterson’s companion books on Flash and Composition.

I just bought this book for my tab to read on a Kindle app. I am a few chapters in and have already picked up some interesting things that I have not figured out yet just trying to get the whole manual settings on my own. I will post again when I finish it up.

Just downloaded this book this very day to my kindle. compulsive reading for myself (very much a beginner) with a bridge camera Fuji HS20. i have read 25% of it already and can i say it has explained so much as to why not to use those auto settings, i have had what i consider to be milestones of advancement just by experimenting with shutter speed/aperture setting and of course ISO setting with some mindblowing resuluts. Well done Brian for giving us a chance getting kinda’ addicted already!
